Perhaps not very renowned for its beauty, Algeciras is still a place worth visiting. The town holds little history and the culture is an amalgam of Spanish, Arabic and French traditions. The municipal museum and municipal market are worth visiting in Algeciras and car rental is a great option for visitors.
Algeciras is a wonderful place to visit yet there is not much written about this amazing place. There is a beautiful charm in Algeciras and the town holds more history than most people think it does. The beautiful hand and ball sculpture, which was designed by Todd Slaughter, can be seen high above on the Carbrito Pass. This enigmatic sculpture is the symbol of the meeting point of two cultures and when the wind blows through it, the ball rotates and makes an eerie sound. Use Algercias car hire facilities to take a trip to this point.
Algercias is the most southerly port in Europe and one of the busiest ports in Spain. Though Algeciras cannot be described as a pretty city, it has some historical buildings. There are a lot of restaurants and bars in Algeciras. Once off the road there are a lot of tree lined squares and parks and it is a very traditional part of the country.
Mercado de Abastos is a great educational experience. It is the municipal market and is famous for fish, mussels and other kind of meat. Fresh vegetables are also available in profusion, which are usually sold according to volume rather than weight. The market is usually very crowded and noisy. Everybody in the market speaks at the top of their voices and there is a cacophony of Arabic, French and Spanish. It is a great place to find out more about the traditions of this region and to spend some time mingling with the locals.
Almost every shop in Algeciras sells leather goods and most of these items come from Morocco. There are not a lot of shopping opportunities for those who like traditional high street stores. However, one can find really good souvenirs all over the town and it is a great place to find something unique and unusual to take home.
The municipal museum is open from Monday to Friday and observes a siesta. Some of the artefacts in the museum date back to the 18th century. For those who enjoy history, Algercias car rental is a must as they can explore this and other historical sites in a fairly short space of time.
